Add a Photo to Your Listing A photo of your item can help boost bidding. A picture really is worth a thousand words. Follow these four simple steps and you'll be adding photos like a pro. (If you already have your pictures on the web, you can skip to Step 4.) Step 1. Get a good picture (photo) of your item you want to sell. Step 2. Scan it (save it) into your computer. Step 3. Upload it to your web host. Step 4. Link to it when listing your auction item. Step 1: Get a good picture of your item you want to sell. You can take a picture of your item with a regular camera or a digital camera (see Step 2). Taking good pictures is essential. Make sure there is good lighting in the room. Also, make sure the picture is in focus. Step 2: Scan it (save it) into your computer You'll need to save your photos as digital pictures (also called "electronic images"). To get started, choose the type of equipment that's best for you. Digital camera - A digital camera is the easiest and best way to get sharp Web photos. This type of camera is just like a regular camera, except pictures are stored in the camera's memory instead of on film. Don't have a digital camera? See the wide range of digital cameras for sale in the digital camera section. Your digital camera should come with instructions on how to transfer (upload) your photo to your computer. Regular camera and scanner - Take a picture with a regular camera and then use a scanner to convert your picture into an electronic image. Don't have a regular camera? See the wide range of cameras for sale in our camera section. Or, forgo the camera and use only a scanner if the items are small and lie flat, like stamps or jewelry. Scanners directly transfer pictures to your computer. Note: If you don't have a scanner, check out the scanners for sale our scanners section, or copy centers such as Kinkos or Mail Boxes Etc. can do the scanning for you. At this point you should have your digital picture (electronic file) in your computer. Now you're ready to edit your photo (optional). To edit your image, use the editing software included with your digital camera or scanner. Alternatively, free programs are available from Shareware.com or Tucows.com. Other editing software packages include Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition or Microsoft Picture It!. Tips: Picture file size should be under 50 KB (kilobytes) for quick page downloads. The visual size of your picture should be no larger than a standard photograph (3" by 5" or 4" by 6"). Remove unnecessary background. Save your edited picture as a JPEG or JPG file (file types other than JPEG, JPG, or GIF should not be used). Here's how: Choose Save As from the File menu. Name your file. Select JPEG or JPG from the "Save as type" drop-down list. Note: Selecting JPEG or JPG will automatically end your filename with .jpg (for example, myphoto will now be myphoto.jpg). You're now ready to move on to Step 3: Copy your photo to the Web! Step 3: Upload your picture to your web host Now you'll need to find a "home" for your photo on the Web. Here at The Free Auction, we do not host images, so you have to upload your pics to a web host. After you have it uploaded to your host, you simply link to it when you list your item for sale. Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide free Web space for their customers. Contact your ISP to see if this is the case. If your ISP does not provide Web space, there are hundreds of free image hosting companys on the web. Here is a small listing of picture hosting services: (Each company offers help on getting your images uploaded to their server) Pongo Twaze PixHost Some of these services have their uploading "built in" to their web pages - in other words you do not need a FTP Program (see below). You can just tell them where your picture is located on your hard drive and just hit "upload", and that's it. Others will require you to have FTP software. Some services require specific software to upload files. This software is called FTP (File Transfer Protocol or File Transfer Program). If you're not using your ISP for Web space or if your ISP's software is difficult for you to use, check out these popular programs: WS_FTP CuteFTP FTP Voyager Fetch (for Macs) Agian, each hosting company offers help on getting your images uploaded to their server. Step 4: Link to your picture when listing your auction item Once your picture is hosted somewhere, you'll need to put the picture's Web address in the Picture URL box on the Sell Your Item page. Here's how: Find out your picture's Web address (URL); for example, http://www.myhost.com/my-user-id/ Add the name of your picture file; for example: myphoto.jpg Enter the result (in this case, http://www.myhost.com/my-user-id/myphoto.jpg) in the Picture URL box on the Sell Your Item page. To verify your picture, hit "preview", and if everything was done correctly, a preview of your auction will show up. (If your image doesn't display, you may have mistyped the URL. Hit "back" to correct any mistakes) If it looks good, hit "post". Now your auction is live! Congratulations. That's it! Questions? Problems? Suggestions? Contact us. |
